The Scoop on Pet-Friendly Rentals

THE FACTS
In the US, 36% of households own a dog, and 9 out of 10 of those households consider their dog a member of the family. For these families, pet travel is an important factor in traveling. A survey by the American Pet Products Association (APPA) found that 37% of animal owners travel with their pets every year, up 19% over the last decade.
WHY IT MATTERS
Guests often sacrifice the length and frequency of their vacations as a result of not being able to travel with their pets. Many travelers hold pet-friendly accommodations and destinations in high regard, with 52% of surveyed pet owners saying that they only stay at pet-friendly properties. Increasing the options and ease with which travelers can take their furry friends could encourage them to take longer, as well as more frequent trips.
FOR YOUR INVESTMENT PROPERTY CLIENTS
In our area, only 3-5% of the vacation rentals are pet friendly, as most HOAs don’t allow renters to bring pets. With this in mind, your clients searching for investment properties with the highest possible return should consider a rental in this niche market. Pet-friendly properties generally earn 18-20% more revenue annually compared to properties that do not allow pets.
SPECIFICS TO OUR MARKET
Houses and cottages have no specific pet restrictions, allowing the owners to determine if they will allow furry friends. In Orange Beach, Silver Beach Condominiums allow renters to bring pets and in Gulf Shores, Compass Point does the same.
CONCLUSION
Pet travel is an important part of the travel industry and should not be taken lightly or ignored. With over a third of pet owners saying they simply won’t travel without their pets, making traveling with pets as accessible as possible would be beneficial for both travelers and businesses.
